Scholars have written about the need for a new, global ethics for the 21st century, one that effectively addresses modern global challenges while drawing inspiration from the timeless wisdom of ancient teachers, particularly from China and Greece.

The goal of the symposium is to exchange ideas and knowledge to shape a more ethical and enlightened world.

In 2022 and 2023, two symposia were held in Athens and Thessaloniki, where scholars looked to Aristotle and Confucius, as well as various classical philosophers, to exchange ideas and knowledge to shape a more enlightened and ethical world

The third Confucius-Aristotle Symposium was held in Qufu and Beijing, China. This event, a collaboration between esteemed institutions from China and Greece, was convened by the UN SDSN, led by Jeffrey Sachs and organized by Philo Wang.

The symposium comprised two sections. The first, titled "Ancient Wisdom for Modern Challenges," took place from July 8 to 10, 2024 in Qufu, hosted by the Nishan World Center for Confucian Studies and the China Confucius Foundation.

The second section, "Commons in Intellectual Traditions and Future Practices," was held from July 11 to 12 in Beijing, hosted by the Tsinghua Institute for Advanced Study in Humanities and Social Sciences and The Mencius Foundation.
